Advancing Clean/Green Ammonia for Agriculture and Shipping in California

California’s agricultural sector produces over a third of the US’s food supply and relies on imported ammonia for fertilizer. As California’s agricultural sector faces ammonia price volatility coupled with growing pressure to decarbonize and manage organic waste, locally produced green/clean ammonia is emerging as a powerful alternative to fossil-derived imports, and as a new clean fuel. Produced using renewable electricity, and increasingly via hydrogen made from organic waste, green/clean ammonia offers a scalable, low-emissions alternative to imported fossil-derived ammonia, while supporting soil health, food system resilience, and circular economy models.

This GHC-hosted webinar explores a real-world deployment of green/clean ammonia in agriculture, and its important role in advancing clean shipping, and the unique opportunity for California to lead in this space. The session will feature perspectives from grower cooperatives, shipping leaders, policy experts, and safety specialists, followed by a moderated discussion focused on how the GHC’s Clean Fuels Initiative can help accelerate these efforts across the state.

Speakers:

  • Dr. Ibrahim Muritala, Global Hydrogen Leader, American Bureau of Shipping

  • Tristan Peitz, Head of Business Development, TalusAg

  • Gary Smith, President/CEO & Co-Founder, Ammonia Safety & Training Institute
